Municipality of Krummhörn

Village of Greetsiel

Greetsiel is located at a small bay in the northwestern part of Krummhörn municipality.

Greetsiel Flag

Description of flag:
It is a black over red over blue horizontal tricolour with a coat of arms in the centre, shifted to the bottom. The shield’s top edge is the top line of the red stripe. In the centre of the black stripe is the name of the village in white capitals.
Note: The flag was only used as a jack of local tourist ships. Probably neither Greetsiel nor the municipality of Krummhörn have flags of their own.
Source: I spotted this flag in Greetsiel harbour on 14 September 2009.

Greetsiel Coat of Arms

Description of coat of arms:
In a silver shield is an a blue ancient ship of hansa traders, with three masts, being topped by blue spur wheels with yellow dots in the centre. In the centre of the main mast is a black inescutcheon, carrying a golden harpy in a black field.
The inescutcheon is the shield of the Cirksena family. The ship is symbolizing shipping and fishingas main business lines. The members of the Cirksena kin later on were made Imperial Counts (Reichsgrafen) and Princes of Ostfriesland. The blue spur wheels are also alluding to them and to the city of Norden. In Greetsiel had been the family seat and castle of the Cirksenas until the 18th century.
