At the official municipal website there is the following:
Jorge Candeias, 7 February 1998
The flag is composed of three horizontal stripes, white, yellow, and red. The first stripe in white represents peace. The second in yellow represents strength. The third in red represents courage. The red color of the shield represents courage.... The golden star represents the Companhia de Melhoramentos Norte do Paraná (Company for Improvements of Northern Paraná), which founded the municipality. The small harp (lira), a musical instrument, represents the name of Maringá, which was inspired by a song. The axe represents the tool used by the pioneers to cut down the woods that gave way to the city. The other stars are the Southern Cross, which represents the Christian faith and the spirit of Brazilian-ness. 1947 is the year of foundation of Maringá, and 1952 is the year when Maringá became a municipality. The coffee branch and the wheat show the products of the area. The five-towered mural crown signifies the city.
